Evan McMullin has announced his campaign to represent Utah in the next US Senate race in 2022.

McMullin, a BYU graduate and former CIA officer best known for his independent “Anti-Trump” run in the 2016 presidential election, will be racing to replace Mike Lee as an independent third party.

“I’m not running as a Republican or a Democrat,” McMullin said. “I present myself as a patriot, as an American committed to defending our nation and changing our politics for the better.”

McMullin announced his campaign this morning via Twitter. Attached to Tweeter is a three-minute video detailing his position on the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill and the current state of US political polarization.

“America has reached another crossroads – our fiery streets and our desecrated temple of democracy,” he said in the video. “The extremes in Washington don’t represent Utah.”

McMullin will operate under a platform to unite Utah. “Our policy is broken,” said McMullin, “and that puts our country in danger. We need leaders who unite rather than divide.

As a third-party candidate, McMullin won’t need to get the main Republican vote that other potential candidates Becky Edwards and Ally Isom will need. This will put it directly on the ballot against whoever gets the primary Republican nomination.

Regarding his chances of winning, Holly Richardson, editor-in-chief of the Utah Policy Daily, said McMullin will make some interesting talking points, but ultimately have very little chance of winning against whoever wins the Republican nomination. “It will be a Republican who wins,” she said.

Candidates’ reactions

Becky Edwards, tweeted his support in response to his campaign announcement, saying “Welcome to the race. I look forward to the conversations we will share throughout our campaigns.

Ally Isom tweeted a response to Salt Lake City Tribune Columnist Robert Gherke, declaring: “You can’t change the GOP from the outside. Evan overestimates his support in UT. People [in 2016] were simply looking for an alternative to Clinton and Trump. They can’t tell you what it represents.

Mike Lee, Utah’s current representative in the US Senate, has yet to publicly respond to McMullin’s announcement.
