Leon McKenzie on Sure Sports, helping athletes take charge of their finances

Sure Sports Founder and Chairman Leon McKenzie joined Rich Salgado on Big Daddy & Friends to discuss his background and how he started providing financial services to professional athletes.

Leon McKenzie: from the great banking job to the sports entrepreneur

McKenzie explained how he used to work as a financial analyst and then as a credit analyst for a large bank, but found himself a bit out of place in this work environment, feeling like he could use his skills in a different context.

When he moved to Miami, McKenzie came into contact with an athlete who was struggling to get a loan amid a global financial crisis.

“The banks were in trouble around 2008… but also, it was difficult to understand the makeup of a professional athlete and to be able to use their contract as an asset on their balance sheet,” explained McKenzie. “We saw that there was a need.”

From there the company snowballed, as McKenzie, who received his MBA from Villanova University, said, “The next year we had five athletes and decided to incorporate.

McKenzie and Sure Sports are now working with thousands of athletes. Mostly during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a real demand for services like Sure Sports, because several best prospects in the next one 2021 NFL Draft Opted Out of College Football season to focus on preparing the pros.
