Ligue 1 Ace rejects offer of ‘astronomical salary’ to join Newcastle United

Newcastle United encountered a problem in their January transfer window business, Lucas Paquetá reportedly refused to move to St James’ Park.

Footmercato reports that the Brazil international turned down an ‘astronomical salary’ offer from Newcastle, who were willing to pay the midfielder an astonishing € 850,000 per month, which is more than € 10million per year .

But Paquetá doesn’t seem to be motivated by the huge financial incentive of a move to Tyneside, and is happy in Lyon.

He apparently wouldn’t consider moving to a club more prominent than Lyon in Europe, which seems to rule out the Magpies.

Paquetá has been in great shape for ‘Les Gones’ this season, having scored seven goals and registered four assists in 21 appearances in all competitions.

Newcastle have been linked with many players since their controversial takeover by a Saudi-led BIP in October.

The club are expected to spend the money in January in an effort to come out of the last three, having collected just 10 points in 17 games so far.

They sit 19th in the table and have the daunting prospect of a visit from defending champions Manchester City on Sunday.

As for Lyon, they will face Metz in Ligue 1 on Wednesday night and currently occupy 13th place in the standings with 25 points in 17 games.

Their last away game against Paris FC in the Coupe de France was suspended at half-time on Friday due to crowd problems.
