‘Morbius’ expands Sony’s universe of Marcel characters

One of Sony Pictures Universe’s Most Compelling and Conflicted Characters of Marvel Characters Comes to the Big Screen in Action-Thriller Morbius as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic anti-hero Michael Morbius.

Dangerously afflicted with a rare blood disease and determined to save others suffering the same fate, Dr. Morbius takes a desperate gamble. While at first glance it seems like a radical success, a darkness in him is unleashed. Will good prevail over evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?

“Morbius is in search of good – the cure for a disease. He will find it, regardless of the cost to himself or to society,” says director Daniel Espinosa. “And in his search for the good, he turns into something he hates. He has to accept the ugliness inside him, and that there is something beautiful in it. This will be his strength, what makes him unique.

Morbius’ increasingly desperate search leads him to combine human DNA with that of the vampire bat – the only mammal that survives solely on blood – which has evolved to develop blood thinners… a genetic mutation which Morbius is convinced will cure him and others of his disease. The treatment not only cures him, but gives him superhuman strength, the agility of an Olympic athlete, even the echolocation powers of the bat – to “see” objects in space by harnessing the sounds that surround it. But the cure also turns Morbius into a (literally) bloodthirsty monster – a hideous creature with urges he’s only partially able to control.

According to Espinosa, it is the character’s inner humanity, his duality between the virtuous man and the brutal creature, that makes him so irresistible. “Michael Morbius is one of the most selfless characters in the Marvel Universe,” he says. “He is one of the few who truly believe in good. This good man has a horrible disease, and in his trials to save himself and the people he cares for, he turns into a monster.

As a man who’s spent countless hours reading and thinking about comic books, Espinosa says it’s not that surprising Morbius’ duality earned him a sequel. “Most great heroes are anti-heroes,” he says. “Most of us are reluctant to accept that we are the chosen one, and Morbius is the same. The most interesting characters in the Marvel Universe have always been those who have had one foot on each side: Magneto, Rogue , Wolverine, in his own way, Venom All of these characters are the ones that are fundamentally the most fascinating to us as movie buffs and comic book readers.
