The new Chief Minister of Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi (58), is known for his belief in astrology when it comes to reaching great heights in politics.
Days after the lawmaker for the third time was inducted into the cabinet of Captain Amarinder Singh’s government in 2017, Channi apparently built a road from a park outside his official residence in Sector 2 of Chandigarh, as an astrologer reportedly advised him to have an “east facing” entrance to his residence in order to improve his political outlook.
But as this entry was deemed illegal, this road was razed by the administration of Chandigarh a few hours after its construction. Channi once rode an elephant in the lawns of his home on the advice of his astrologer.
Channi was Minister of Technical Education and Industrial Training, Tourism and Cultural Affairs, and Minister of Job Creation in the government of Captain Amarinder Singh. Previously, he was Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly from 2015 to 2016.
He belongs to the Sikh community of Ramdasia.
Channi’s spectacular rise in politics began as chairman of Kharar city council in 2002. He contested the 2007 parliamentary elections in Chamkaur Sahib constituency as a congressional rebel and won as an independent of this reserved constituency.
In 2012, he joined the Congress and won the seat. In 2016, he was appointed opposition leader in the Punjabi Assembly against the wishes of Captain Amarinder Singh. It draws its strength from the Congressional High Command and it is seen as a choice of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
