Nightwing became a monster in the universe where he never gave up as Robin

Dick Grayson is a monstrous version of himself in a new alternate universe where he remained Robin and never decided to become Nightwing.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Batman versus. Bigby # 2

DC Comics First Robin, now Night wing, is arguably the most famous sidekick in comics. It has evolved a lot since its introduction, but not always for the better. Dick and the other Robins have long debated whether their time with Batman was worth it, but in a new series, it looks like Dick’s time with Batman has turned him into someone fans would barely recognize as the amazing boy.

The new DC Black Label mini-series Batman vs. Bigby! A wolf in Gotham by Brian Level and Bill Willingham is a cross with the popular series Fables. The series follows Batman working on a case of murders in Gotham that appear to have been committed by a wolf. The investigation leads him to Detective Bigby Wolf, also known as the Big Bad Wolf, who is in Gotham for a reason that is not yet entirely clear. Bigby and the apparent villain of the story, Bookworm, appear to be on the hunt for a priceless book from another world. While this series has a lot of refreshing ideas, the most compelling is its take on Dick Grayson, who never became Nightwing and instead kept the Robin mantle.

In issue 2, it is shown that Dick not only stayed as Robin, but also set up a full set up to train other people to become “Robins”. Children are subjected to rigorous physical training as they move up through the ranks, eventually winning the Robin title. Batman then uses them for various cases and investigations all over town. Dick and Bruce treat these kids like militant forces, even using psychological tactics to make them harder.

Batman vs. Bigby Dick Grayson Robin

In the main DC Universe, there have been numerous stories that involve Bruce turning Dick into Robin essentially turning him into a child soldier in his war on crime. This story takes that to a whole new level with Dick, as Robin, training and raising new children to be crime fighters in Batman’s personal army. With him normally questioning his past, it’s a whole different take on Dick Grayson. He has little to no empathy and comes across as a monstrous bully who only cares about destroying the criminal world of Gotham. This version, while unique, is a harsh and spooky look at what could have happened to one of DC’s brightest heroes.

While its time as Robin was perhaps one of the best years of training he could have had, without a doubt it was for the best that Dick went on his own and became Night wing.
