Southwestern Oregon Community College closes the 2020-2021 Physics and Astronomy Lecture Series by welcoming Dr. Holly Gilbert, Director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research High Altitude Observatory. In his talk “A New Era in Solar Observations†Gilbert will discuss some of the current solar and heliospheric observations (both space and terrestrial) and their scientific implications. In an overview of his talk, Gilbert shares: “The latest generation of solar observational data provides a pivot towards establishing connections in different fields of solar physics and facilitates advanced modeling of meteorological conditions and impacts. spatial. We study the important physical couplings in the solar atmospheric layers, as well as the connections of the solar corona to the heliosphere. To advance our understanding of the impact of solar activity and variability on space weather conditions, improved and innovative observations have recently been brought online from space and from the ground. For example, the Solar Orbiter mission establishes links between phenomena on the Sun and their manifestations in interplanetary space. Ground observations from the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory and the new Daniel K. Inouye Telescope in Hawaii advance our understanding of emerging and evolving magnetic fields in the solar atmosphere.
Gilbert’s talk will highlight some of these observations, the science behind them, and the implications for space weather forecasts and forecasts.
