Applications for the University of New Mexico Physics and Astronomy Research Experience for Undergraduates are now being accepted. The program is a 10-week summer research internship program for undergraduate students studying physics and astronomy.
As part of the program, students will benefit from valuable experience, including the opportunity to work and conduct research alongside a faculty member from the department on a range of topics from biophysics to optical sciences to by radio astronomy. Students will also hear about different career paths in physics and astronomy, give presentations on their research, participate in educational and social outings, and participate in a range of recreational activities and opportunities to discover New Mexico.
The program pays for most student expenses – travel, on-campus accommodation, $ 5,000 stipend, cost of most activities – and focuses on developing strong student-mentor relationships as well as laboratory skills and in research. A variety of recreational activities and opportunities to experience New Mexico are also offered.
The top priority of the program is to serve underserved populations in the southwestern states. Preference will be given to women and minority applicants from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Utah. However, well-qualified applicants from any demographic nationwide are also encouraged to apply.
The program was originally funded by a grant of $ 284,687 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) over three years.
