BrainChip reflects on a successful 2021, with a transition to market readiness behind next-generation edge-based AI solutions

LAGUNA HILLS, Calif., January 23, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BrainChip Holdings Ltd (ASX: BRN, OTCQX: BRCHF, ADR: BCHPY) is a leading provider of ultra-low-power, high-performance artificial intelligence technologies and the world’s largest commercial producer of neuromorphic AI chips and IP . BrainChip looks forward to 2022 as it closes out its most successful year ever driven by technological advancements to its Akida™ technology, commercialization, addition of seasoned leaders to both its management and board , market exchange upgrades and more.

BrainChip saw its vision of brain-inspired neuromorphic AI architecture come true this year. This technology, which mimics the processing function and learning structure of the human brain, helps customers create ultra-low-power products with the ability to perform fully on-chip classification and quickly learn about chip without the need to connect to the cloud.

Among the many milestones achieved this year, the Akida AKD1000 neuromorphic processor production chips were received from BrainChip’s manufacturing partner, SocioNext America and TSMC. BrainChip has completed functional and performance testing of production chips and has started mass production. This success has allowed the company to begin accepting and shipping orders for Akida development kits to its partners, large enterprises and OEMs for their own in-house product testing, validation and development. Additionally, BrainChip has licensed its Akida intellectual property to industry heavyweights ASIC, MegaChips and Renesas, to help them improve and grow their technology positioning for cloud-neutral next-generation AI products.

This year also saw the introduction of MetaTF™, a versatile ML framework that works with TensorFlow™1, which allows people working in the space of convolutional neural networks to move quickly and easily to neuromorphic computing without having to learn anything new. The MetaTF development environment is an easy-to-use machine learning framework for building, training, and testing neural networks, supporting system development for Edge AI on the Akida Event Domain Neural Processor AKD1000 from BrainChip. Over 4,500 potential customers started using MetaTF in 2021 alone.

The rapid success of Akida’s product development enabled BrainChip to move its US Headquarters to larger facilities to support expected customer growth as the company continues to move towards commercialization of its Akida AKD1000 neuromorphic processor and complete development environment. The new 10,000 square foot (929 square meter) facility is four times larger than its former headquarters and provides the company with the ability to tailor its services and processes as needed to meet the expected needs of customers and the supporting infrastructure.

BrainChip recently announced the appointment of Mr. Sean Hehir as the new CEO of BrainChip. He succeeds interim CEO Peter van der Made, who is full-time in his former role as CTO. Mr. Hehir’s goal is to guide BrainChip’s progress towards full commercialization of the Akida AKD1000 chip and its intellectual property. He is joined by additional non-executive directors on the company’s board – former ARM executive Antonio J. Viana and innovation champion and strategic advisor Ms. Pia Turcinov.

As a public company, BrainChip has received several upgrades to its market presence, including its addition to the S&P/ASX 300 Index, an update to its ticker symbol on the OTC market, and an upgrade to the listing on the OTCQX Best market. BrainChip has also launched a US-based ADR (BCHPY) which enables BrainChip to continue its quest for broad accessibility to the US capital markets. Due to strong demand for high growth potential, artificial intelligence stocks in the US are expected to drive an influx of US investment and ultimately increase shareholder value. The company’s successes have driven its share price up 100% in the past 12 months

Other highlights of this year include its nomination to the EE Times Silicon 100, the launch of five sensor modalities from Akida (smell, vision, audio, touch and taste, which see real-world application in the detection of Covid-19, facial recognition, voice recognition, vibration analysis and recognition of the taste of wine and beer). Hands-on demonstrations in quality control and other industrial environments consume only microwatts to milliwatts of power. BrainChip founder Peter van der Made won the 2021 AI Hardware Innovator Award based on Akida’s development and production capabilities, the continuation of its highly popular “This is Our Mission” podcasts and frequent appearances at trade shows and events around the world.

“One of the things that impressed me the most about BrainChip when I sought to join the company was the quality and volume of success it achieved, and the dedicated and talented team that is at the heart of BrainChip’s success,” said Hehir. “As the company transitions from strength of vision to strength of production, the possibilities are endless. BrainChip transitions into market readiness, expanding a product portfolio, improving resources human resources and improving the stock market I’m excited to see Akida’s impact on the US$46 billion Total Addressable Market (TAM) “Edge AI” as BrainChip has unequivocally proven that it is the leader in the field of neuromorphic AI. I can’t wait to see the kind of game-changing moves we make in 2022.”

About BrainChip Holdings Ltd (ASX: BRN, OTCQX: BRCHF, ADR: BCHPY)

BrainChip is a global technology company that produces a revolutionary neuromorphic processor that brings artificial intelligence to the forefront in ways beyond the capabilities of other products. The chip is high performance, small, ultra-low power, and enables a wide range of advanced capabilities that include on-chip training, learning, and inference. The event-based neural network processor is inspired by the advanced nature of the human brain and implemented in an industry-standard digital process. By mimicking brain processing, BrainChip has pioneered a processing architecture, called Akida™, that is both scalable and flexible to meet the demands of cutting-edge devices. At the edge, sensor inputs are analyzed at the point of acquisition rather than transmitted through the cloud to a data center. Akida is designed to provide a complete ultra-low-power and fast AI Edge network for visual, audio, olfactory and intelligent transducer applications. Reducing system latency provides faster response and a more energy-efficient system that can reduce the significant carbon footprint of data centers.
