Huge planet discovered orbiting two of universe’s hottest and largest stars

Scientists recently discovered a planet about 10 times the size of Jupitor orbiting two stars that were previously believed to be too hot for a planet to exist around.

According to an article published in the scientific journal Nature On Wednesday, the discovery of the planet, nicknamed “b Centauri (AB) b” or “b Centauri b”, challenges existing ideas about star formation.

“Until now, no planet has been spotted around a star more than three times as massive as the Sun,” wrote the European Southern Observatory, which used its very large telescope in Chile to photograph the planet. .

“It completely changes the image of massive stars as hosts on the planet,” said study leader Markus Janson, professor of astronomy at Stockholm University, according to NBC News.

The massive exoplanet, that is to say located outside our solar system, was photographed in orbit around the Centaur, a pair of stars 325 light years from Earth in the constellation Centaur, according to CNN, and is the hottest and largest binary system astronomers have ever found.

The Centauri system b is 15 million years old, young compared to Earth’s sun which is 4.6 billion years old, and is at least six times the size and three times hotter, according to the media outlet. This is the first time that a scientist has discovered a star with more than three times the mass of Earth’s sun, CNN added.

“We have always had a very solar system-centric view of what planetary systems are ‘supposed to’ look like,” said study author Matthias Samland, post-doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute of astronomy, in a statement according to CNN. “Over the past decade, the discovery of many planetary systems in surprising and new configurations has allowed us to broaden our historically narrow view. This discovery adds another exciting chapter to this story, this time for massive stars.”
