In the next brand new issue of BOOM! Studio’ Power Rangers Universe, the Morphin Masters are about to finally get their new powers and forms, but that might prove too soon for future Legends. The Morphin Masters, also known as The First Ones, have often been referred to in classic Ranger lore as those who discovered the powers of the Morphin Grid at the beginning of the universe and time itself.

Not only were these mythical beings mentioned in passing during BOOM! The comics of the studios, but also throughout the real Power Rangers television franchise. The Morphin Masters previously created the Dino Gems that gave the Dino Rangers their powers, as well as the Energems for the Dino Charge Rangers and the Ninja Nexus Prism for the Ninja Steel Rangers. Additionally, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers power pieces created by Ninjor were potentially crafted from the teachings of Morphin masters, since the masters’ books were housed in Ninjor’s temple. Now, Power Rangers Universe offers insight into the Masters themselves and how they first discovered these powers.

Preview images of Power Rangers Universe #5 by Nicole Andelfinger and Simone Ragazzoni was revealed courtesy of CBR, which also shared cover art by Dan Mora as well as variant covers by Kath Lobo, Goñi Montes, Michal Ivan, and Audrey Mok. Perhaps most interesting is the included synopsis, which reads: “On the Masterforge, the Morphin Master Teens and the Morphinaut feel the replica of the smoking crater on the Earth’s surface. At the mysterious crash site, their newfound powers and skills are put to the test against a horde of infantrymen! But what happens when their powers start to wane… and even begin to backfire? Power Rangers Universe #5 officially releases on April 27.

What makes this synopsis so interesting is the implication that even Masters who first discovered the Morphine Grid couldn’t fully harness their newfound power without consequence, at least not at first. The TV series and comics from BOOM! Power Rangers franchise have painted the Morphin Masters as those unflinching legends in the past. The struggles they faced to discover unimaginable power for the first time have rarely, if ever, been reflected.

This now sets the Morphin Masters on course for an upward and downward journey of control and self-discovery, similar to the Rangers tales that audiences have grown accustomed to over the years. Highlighting their struggle should pique fans’ interest in seeing how they are shaped by unsuspecting teenagers with an attitude befitting the legend they were nurtured to become.

BOOM! studios go outside Power Rangers Universe #5 by Nicole Andelfinger and Simone Ragazzoni in digital stores and local comic shops starting April 27, 2021.
