Last week I celebrated 53 trips around the sun, and it seems the last few years I haven’t been in the best shape for my birthday. I ALWAYS start a month ahead, preparing to be “in the best shape of my life” when the day comes, however obstacles always derail this plan.

Last year I was recovering from a bout with Lyme disease that put me in the hospital for a few days in August. It took me over a month of therapy to regain my balance and be able to walk upright again, so my condition was not nearly as high as I had expected.

This year I was on track and in great physical shape but last Sunday I dropped a 15 # dumbbell on my foot while cleaning the gym and broke a few toes. Again, I am not performing at full capacity as expected.

The bottom line is that the universe doesn’t care what day or time of year to serve us a shit sandwich. He will throw obstacles, setbacks and adversity at us whenever we feel like it. Even on special occasions, birthdays and holidays.

That being said, it’s up to us to be prepared when something happens that wasn’t planned.

Now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying walk through life LOOKING for things to go wrong, I’m just saying we need to be ready when it does.

Of course, we can’t be prepared for things like Covid and accidental crashes, but psychologically we have to be able to pivot and change direction without wasting a minute, because things will happen that will derail us all. days.

We usually have 2 choices when problems arise.

1. We can apologize, mourn the victim, play the blame game, or,

2. We can buckle up, roll up the sleeves, and handle the situation.

We need to be solution-oriented, and when you think from that perspective and see things through the lens of solutions, it’s easier to overcome obstacles.

I had planned to train in the morning workout the day after my foot crush in the gym. I could have let another trainer do it, however, I decided to bandage the broken bones, wrap my foot and deliver an amazing workout. I had the perfect excuse to stay home, however, it was not an option for me because I was engaged.

When you do something, it’s up to you to make it happen regardless of the circumstances. “I am responsible for everything in my life, and it gives me the power and control to change my situation” is a line of the credo we learned in The Project, and I recite it and live it every day.

I interpret this line of the creed which says that whatever our past or current state, we are in control of how we navigate our lives from the present to the future. We are in control and can change our situation no matter what situation we find ourselves in.

Don’t look back, just look ahead.

I like to use the analogy: look at the windshield as opposed to the rearview mirror because the windshield is bigger and you can’t change what you just went through or what was in your past. You can only control which direction you are moving and how fast you drive to get there.

Last week, I was reflecting with an old high school buddy about our memories of being rough and tumbling down the streets of Central Falls.

We talked about football in high school and all the fights we’ve been in and marveled at how we got through it, and were both somewhat successful and unscathed, despite the environment we had. been raised.

These memories will be there forever, however, it is more important and productive to focus on what is in front of you and what you can become.

Decide what you are willing to do to get there, what is important, and what your purpose in life is.

This goes for your health, your fitness, your livelihood, your career, and any hobbies or pasts that you want to do and are good at. No matter your past or current circumstances, it’s up to us to be solution-based and focus on accomplishing our mission despite obstacles and adversity.

Remember, the universe doesn’t care who you are, how much money you have, what time of year, or what special occasion you are celebrating. He will always try to throw curved balls at us and create resistance for us, which will make it difficult to achieve what we set out to do.

It’s the same as going to the gym. Every time we go there we have to test ourselves under resistance to become stronger and we have to do it consistently !!

So use adversity and obstacles to get stronger, channel your strength, stay focused and always push yourself to get “one more rep” before you go !!

Committed to your success,

One more year, Coach Matt
