Five Marvel heroes have just been selected to save the universe from one of the greatest dark threats of all time. Here is how they were chosen.

Warning! Spoilers for Darkhold: Alpha # 1 by Marvel Comics below

The Elder God Chthon has just been awakened and it’s up to five heroes from across the Marvel Universe to stop him. But, how does Scarlet witch choose five heroes to face off against one of the most powerful evil deities of all time? There’s a very specific reason she summoned Blade, Black Bolt, and Spider-Man, and it has to do with the Darkhold.

In the new Darkhold: Alpha Crossover Event # 1, Scarlet Witch feels a surprise connection with Chthon, the Elder God who originally wrote the Darkhold. After having nightmares over the deaths of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes at the hands of the Darkhold’s demon forces, Wanda Maximoff discovers that someone is after her lost book of evil spells. Doctor Doom and Victorious located the book with the former using Doombots to read it for him so he doesn’t succumb to madness. Unfortunately, Doom foolishly pursues a quest inside the Other Realm to stop Chthon, leading Scarlet Witch to assemble her own team of heroes to stop the Elder God before he destroys the entire Marvel Universe. .

In Darkhold Alpha # 1 By Steve Orlando, Cian Tormey, Jesus Aburtov and Clayton Cowles of VC, Scarlet Witch learns about the Darkhold Defenders, a group of Chalcolithic warriors who once arrested Chthon and returned him to prison. Wanda decides that the best way to stop Chthon again is to form a modern version of the team, made up of heroes with specific roles. Scarlet Witch teams up with Victorious to cast a spell with her cosmic power to bring him five heroes that fit the bill as Darkhold Defenders. Ultimately, Iron Man (The Dreamer), Blade (The Hunter), Wasp (The Artist), Black Bolt (The Stoic), and Spider-Man (The Fool) are transported to the location of the Darkhold.

It doesn’t take a lot of conviction for the heroes to join in on his quest, but things quickly turn sour. After Scarlet Witch reveals that every hero must read a small portion of the Darkhold to temper the potential insanity, the group ends up reading too much and transforming into monsters. Instead of the Darkhold Defenders, they become the Darkhold Defiled.

Tainted or not, the group of transformed heroes are Scarlet Witch’s best chance to stop Chthon and protect the Marvel Universe from the destruction of the Elder God. It was fun to see how each hero fulfilled a specific role on The Scarlet Witch Team to become a version of the Darkhold Defenders, but it remains to be seen how such drastic transformations will impact their powers and actions. Darkhold Alpha # 1 is now in comic book stores.
